Can my windshield be repaired?

Repair works best on small, fresh damage. As a general guide, a chip or crack can usually be repaired when:

  • The chip is about the size of a quarter or smaller
  • A single crack is shorter than about six inches
  • There are no more than three damage points
  • The damage isn't directly in the driver's line of sight or at the edge of the glass

Why repair a chip right away in Florida

Florida windshields go from cool A/C on the inside to 90-degree sun on the outside every afternoon. That temperature swing, plus potholes and highway vibration, is exactly what spreads a chip into a long crack — and once a crack runs, the windshield has to be replaced.

Until your repair, keep the chip clean and dry. A piece of clear tape over it helps, and avoid blasting the defroster or A/C directly at the glass.

How chip repair works

The technician cleans the break, injects a clear resin under pressure to fill it, and cures the resin with UV light. The repair restores strength to the glass and makes the chip far less visible, though a faint mark can remain.

Because the windshield stays in place, a repair usually doesn't affect the cameras mounted on it, so ADAS calibration typically isn't needed.

Is windshield repair free in Florida?

Florida Statute 627.7288 says the deductible on a policy with comprehensive coverage doesn't apply to damage to the windshield — repair or replacement. If you have comprehensive coverage on a Florida policy, a chip repair is typically $0.

How long does windshield chip repair take?

Most chip repairs take about 30 minutes, and you can usually drive right after.

Is windshield chip repair free in Florida?

With comprehensive coverage on a Florida policy, yes, typically. Florida Statute 627.7288 says the deductible doesn't apply to windshield damage.

Can a long crack be repaired?

Usually not. Cracks longer than about six inches, cracks that reach the edge of the glass, and damage in the driver's line of sight generally mean a replacement.

Will the chip disappear completely?

A repair makes the chip much less visible and stops it from spreading, but a faint mark can remain.
