Does GEICO cover windshield replacement in Florida?

Yes — if your GEICO auto policy was issued in Florida and includes comprehensive coverage. Under Florida Statute 627.7288, the deductible doesn't apply to windshield damage, so most GEICO policyholders pay $0 for a repair or replacement.

The waiver covers the front windshield; side and rear glass follow your normal comprehensive deductible. Liability-only policies don't cover damage to your own glass, and policies written in another state follow that state's rules. Not sure what you have? Send us your policy details and we'll check before you do anything.

How to file a GEICO windshield claim

  1. Report the glass claim in the GEICO Mobile app, online in your GEICO account (choose Windshield/Glass as the claim type), or by phone.
  2. When asked where you want the work done, tell GEICO you are choosing your own shop. GEICO recommends Safelite, but its glass-claim guidance says you can choose other shops.
  3. Send us your claim number (or call us and we'll help you through the call) and we schedule your mobile replacement.

Can I choose my own glass shop with GEICO?

Yes. GEICO recommends Safelite, but GEICO's own guidance says you can choose another shop — and Florida Statute 627.7291 says an insurer can't require you to use a particular glass company.

Good to know

  • GEICO warns policyholders about shops that push them to sign an assignment of benefits (AOB). In Florida, glass AOBs are void for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2023 (s. 627.7289) — you file the claim yourself, and we walk you through it.
  • A small chip can often be repaired instead of replaced. With comprehensive coverage in Florida, a windshield repair is also deductible-free.

GEICO windshield claim FAQ

Does GEICO cover windshield replacement in Florida?

Yes, if your GEICO auto policy was issued in Florida and includes comprehensive coverage. Florida Statute 627.7288 says the deductible doesn't apply to windshield damage, so the replacement is typically $0. Liability-only policies don't cover damage to your own glass.

Can I choose my own glass shop with GEICO?

Yes. GEICO recommends Safelite, but GEICO's own guidance says you can choose another shop — and Florida Statute 627.7291 says an insurer can't require you to use a particular glass company.

Who files the windshield claim — me or the glass shop?

You do. For policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2023, Florida law (s. 627.7289) doesn't allow glass benefits to be assigned to a repair shop, so the claim stays in your name. We walk you through it, usually in one short call.

Will a windshield claim raise my GEICO rates?

Windshield claims fall under comprehensive coverage and aren't at-fault accidents, so they usually don't affect rates the way at-fault accidents can. Florida law doesn't specifically bar insurers from considering claim history, so ask GEICO if you're concerned.

Will GEICO make me use Safelite?

No. GEICO recommends Safelite, but you can choose another shop, and Florida Statute 627.7291 prohibits insurers from requiring a particular glass company.
